Abaca
A hard fiber from the leaf stems around the trunk of the abaca plant, Musa textilis (Agotai), which is of the same family as the banana and native to the Philippine Islands and Central America. Also called Manila hemp. Synonyms: Cebu hemp and Davao hemp. Also spelled Abaka. See also Hemp.
Abrasion Resistance Acetate
Man-made fiber composed of acetylated cellulose.
Acid dyes
Class of dyes used for protein & nylon fibers.
Acrylic
Man-made fiber derived from petrochemical by-products.
Acrylic backing
A treatment sometimes used for upholstety and direct application wall fabric.Wallcovering generally requires a heavier treatment.
Aniline
An organic base for many dyestuffs and drugs derived from coal tar or petroleum chemicals. First distilled from indigo (annil) in 1826 by O. Unverdorben. Aniline's commercial importance stems from discovery of mauve by Sir William Henry Perkins in 1856.
Antique satin
A satin weave cloth with an exaggerated slub weft and a fine warp.
Axminster
Popular cut-pile carpets woven on a complex loom invented in Yonkers, New York. They were popularized in Axminster, England, and were woven 27 to 36 inches wide in multicolor. They are available in wider widths today in a variety of fibers.
Balloon cloth
A fine, densely set, plain-woven cloth of combed and carded long-staple cotton.

A clipped weft float that forms a fringe
Bar marks (barre)
An irregularity in the appearance of fabric consisting of textural or color bars in the direction of the weft. Bar marks can be caused by irregularities in the yarn thickness, uneven dyeing, or the variation of pick density during the starting and stopping of the loom. Barre effects are sometimes intentionally created.
Barathea
A twill variation with a broken rib weave on one face and a pebbly texture on the other.
Bark cloth
Nonwoven material made from soaked and beaten inner bark of tropical trees. This term was also used during the fabulous fifties to describe a textured plain fabric, usually of cotton and linen blend.
Basket weave
A variation of plain weave in which two or more warp ends and an equal number of weft picks are woven as one,creating a woven basket effect.
Batik
A resist print in which wax is placed onto a fabric before dyeing in a specific design that will resist the color during the dyeing process.
Batiste
A fine, sheer, plain-woven cloth of combed and carded cotton.
Batten
On some types of hand looms, a batten can be a flat piece of wood shaped like a sword to beat the weft into place. On mechanical looms, a long, thin metal comb, held by a shifting frame, is used to align the weft, or filler yarn.
Beaker dyeing
Dyeing of small samples, usually used for color approvals or specifications.
Beam
A cylinder attached to the loom on which the warp is wound.
Bedford cloth
A weave similar to pique in which supplementary warp ends pad a vertically channeled fabric.
